LAHORE – Former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Najam Sethi paid glowing tribute to Lahore Qalandars CEO Atif Rana, recalling how his financial commitment helped launch Pakistan Super League (PSL) during its most uncertain days.
“When we had nothing but a dream and a bank balance of just $300,000,Atif Rana stepped forward and said, ‘Najam Bhai, whatever amount you need, we will give it to you. Just go ahead and do it,’” Sethi revealed. “At a time when there were no bidders offering even $1.5 million, Atif handed me $2.5 million without hesitation. That one act of faith gave PSL its wings.”
Sethi, while addressing guests at a Lahore Qalandars event in London, revisited the challenges that surrounded the inaugural PSL season. “It was a make-or-break situation. The PCB was hesitant, and we needed at least 10 times more than what we had to get things rolling. Initially, we expected six bidders for team franchises, but only five showed up. Atif Rana was the first to hold my hand.”
That early support, Sethi explained, was instrumental in gathering a small pool of $6-7 million to get the league off the ground, though they still faced a shortfall of another $7-8 million. “It was one of the toughest phases in my career,” he said.
Besides financial hurdles, convincing foreign players to participate in a Pakistan-based league presented another major obstacle. “We began in the UAE and slowly brought it back home. It couldn’t have happened without the full support of Mr. Nawaz Sharif, Mr. Shehbaz Sharif, and the Armed Forces. Together, we turned PSL into a globally respected brand.”
Reflecting on his personal connection with Lahore Qalandars, Sethi revealed a deep affection for the team. “From day one, my heart was with Qalandars, even when they were losing. Now, thanks to their professional planning and Player Development Program, they have won three PSL titles and are the strongest brand in the league.”
He also shared his admiration for the franchise’s name and ethos. “Initially, I was skeptical about the name ‘Qalandars’. I felt it didn’t sound combative enough. But Atif Rana convinced me, it was about embodying the Sufi spirit. Today, ‘Lahore Qalandars’ is a name synonymous with unity, pride, and purpose. I proudly wear my Qalandars shirt every year.”
Sethi concluded by expressing hope that Lahore Qalandars’ winning streak would continue. “They are at their best right now. I believe this is just the beginning, and they will keep their flag flying high in the PSL for the years to come.”
