The government feared that victims of the Post Office scandal who had not yet sought compensation would feel “harassed” if officials chased them to apply, MPs have been told. The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of MPs, which has scrutinised payments, found that many of the wrongly-accused or convicted sub-postmasters were yet to receive “fair and timely” redress. In a report, it said the government had taken “insufficient action” to ensure people entitled to compensation had applied for it. The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) said it had paid out more £1bn in compensation to date. The committee revealed the…

The deputy leader of Reform UK has proposed a new law that would allow members of the public a say when they think criminal sentences are either too harsh or too lenient. MP Richard Tice said he wanted a system where if 500 members of the public said they disagreed with a sentence in a petition to the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC), it would have to decide whether to refer the decision to a court. He said it would add a further safeguard on sentences and that would give the public more confidence in the justice system. A spokesperson…
It was this, John and his daughter Amy tell the BBC, that had helped sustain them through their trauma and grief. Carol, Louise and Hannah remained such a constant presence in their lives that he still talks to them every day, almost a year on from their deaths, John says. “From the moment I wake up, I say good morning to each of them,” he says. “Sometimes I say out loud to Hannah and Louise, ‘girls, sorry I can’t be with you, I’m with your mum at the moment’. As I close my eyes at night, I chat to them…
Having already signed Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back, Liverpool are now nearing a deal for a new left-back in Milos Kerkez. There is of course a big difference in that, as things stand, Kerkez will be arriving from Bournemouth to compete with Andy Robertson rather than replace him. But the need for fresh energy in the position is clear as he enters the final year of his contract. Oodles of dropped catches and two dismal batting collapses cost India dear in first Test against England at Headingley; Shubman Gill’s side lose by five wickets after dominating for much of the match, with new captain’s inexperience perhaps showing – second Test at Edgbaston begins July 2. One of the underlying questions coming out of the first Test at Headingley is how on earth did India lose it. They often had England on the ropes yet contrived to throw those advantages away through batting collapses and grassed catches. Never before had a side notched five individual hundreds in a Test…
Matheus Cunha’s move from Wolves has been announced. But the forward is not the only attacking talent still keen for Ruben Amorim’s project. Bryan Mbeumo’s decision to pursue an Old Trafford move from Brentford – despite other elite clubs in the running – is a positive sign. Captain Bruno Fernandes has turned down the temptation of a money-fuelled Saudi Arabia move that could have given United more money to rebuild the team. The project is far from being alive again, but it’s a start. “Cunha and Mbeumo have Premier League experience, and are the right type,” said Gary Neville. But…
